Olvera-Street.com will be returning to the Venice Biennale for the 2022 edition of the renown international art exhibition. This year’s Biennale is subtitled “The Milk of Dreams,” borrowing the title from a book by mystic artist Leonora Carrington, one of Mexico’s greatest surrealists. The 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia will take place from April 23 to November 27, and is expected to include artists from up to 58 countries, incorporating more than 200 artists, in addition to Carrington. It will be exciting to see art from all over the world!

Leonora Carrington spent the last seven decades of her life in Mexico, despite being born and raised with all the comforts of privilege on a wealthy British estate—a story strikingly similar to that of Christine Sterling, the founder of Olvera Street. Olvera Street, known as Los Angeles’ “first street,” is a Mexican Marketplace located in the heart of Downtown L.A. It is part of a national heritage site that features fine arts and culture. The street has been attracting visitors from around the world for more than 90 years, and features several art museums including the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles, the Chinese American Museum, as well as the site of “La America Tropical,” the controversial mural created by David Alfaro Siqueiros. Sterling thought he was painting a romanticized tropical America. But Siqueiros was a radical activist, and his painting, depicting the struggle of the Mayans to overcome their European suppressors, wasn’t what Sterling had it mind. She ordered it whitewashed. In 1988 the Getty Conservancy Institute began bringing the artwork back to life. It took them 24 years. edition of the renown international art exhibition.

It's fantastic to hear Olvera-Street.com is returning to the Venice Biennale Arte! The "Milk of Dreams" theme sounds intriguing, especially considering the connection to Leonora Carrington and her surrealist vision. Imagine exploring all that art then relaxing with a quick game of Slope Game to unwind. So many artists, so much culture! I look forward to seeing the photos you share from the 59th International Art Exhibition.
